Fascinated by the stars and the Universe from an early age, I first heard of Anaximander of Miletus, I believe, while reading a book from my library in which he was briefly mentioned. But it was only after discovering Carlo Rovelli’s work on him that I decided to write what was originally intended to be a stage play, with Anaximander as its ‘hero’. ‘Anaximander’ — what a wonderful name. It has a beautiful ring to it. It conjures up images of ancient Greece, olive trees, fresh fish… Anyway, at first, I had absolutely no idea where to go, much like Anaximander’s Earth, which has nowhere to fall, no preferred direction. After all, we know almost nothing about him: his life, his personality, even what he looked like. Everything had to be invented. I had to imagine who he was, how he came up with his bold, revolutionary ideas, and how he came to understand, before anyone else, what seems so obvious to us today: that the Earth ‘floats’ in space. What an exciting challenge it was to set aside everything we already know in order to understand how Anaximander of Miletus — the father of scientific thought (at least in the Western world!) — could have arrived at hypotheses that, in some cases, contradicted those of his teacher Thales, yet went on to inspire his disciples, the philosophers who followed him, and ultimately all of humanity.​
